Applying To College

2026-2027 College Application Process 

Spring/Summer To Do List – we recommend you complete the following steps before your senior year:

  • Student - complete the College Advising Information Form—Class of 2027 (home page of Scoir).
  • Parent - set up Scoir account after your student sends (or resends) the invitation.
  • Student - complete FERPA Release and FERPA Waiver in your Scoir account.
  • Student - complete Brag Sheet in Scoir.  It’s an assignment in Scoir. 
  • Parent - complete Brag Sheet in Scoir or download a copy here. 
  • Make an appointment to meet with your college advisor, if you have not already.
  • Take the ACT and/or SAT more than once. 

Things you should know or do BEFORE you apply

 

*HELPFUL HINT!  Check your e-mail regularly.  Colleges will communicate with you through e-mail about any missing documents, scholarship deadlines, and next steps to take once you have been admitted.

Application Method, Requirements and Deadlines

Visit the college’s website to determine how you will apply and identify the college’s deadlines.  We recommend using the institutional application for University of Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, Mississippi State.

  • Common App
  • Directly to the institution (i.e. The University of Alabama, Auburn University, etc.)

Deadlines – college applications should be submitted to each college at least 3 weeks before the college’s deadline so the college advisors have time to complete and gather all high school materials.                     

  • Each admission application should be submitted to the college and college advisors notified at least 3 weeks before the college’s deadline.
  • Student should complete all required parts of the admission application and submit online. Note:  This does not include gathering school documents as they will be sent directly from MBHS (official transcript, letters of recommendation, etc.).  See APPLY & NOTIFY! section.   

Standardized Testing (ACT/SAT)

When students register to take the ACT or SAT, please request that test scores are sent to the high school. Our high school code (CEEB code) is #010-380. 

ACT/SAT scores are not part of your transcript.  Students should send scores directly to colleges and universities through ACT or College Board. Allow 4-6 weeks for colleges to receive score reports.

Test Optional: standardized tests may be optional at some colleges and universities.  Check college websites to learn more about their procedures. 

Some schools allow self-reported test scores. Check individual college websites for testing requirements.

MHS College Advising List of Items to Complete

  • Paper copies the Teacher Recommendation Request form may be picked up in the College Advising office after the first day of school.
  • Student - complete FERPA Release and FERPA Waiver in your Scoir account.
  • Student - complete Brag Sheet in Scoir.  It’s an assignment in Scoir. 
  • Parent - complete Brag Sheet in Scoir or download a copy here. 

Apply & Notify!

*Once you’ve taken all of the above steps, you are ready to apply! Remember, we recommend using the institutional application for University of Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, Mississippi State.

*Complete all required parts of the online application and submit (including application fee payment). Remember to save usernames and passwords. ***Note:  school materials (like transcripts, letter of recommendation, etc.) will not be sent until after you apply and notify your college advisor.  See below. 

*All colleges will require an official transcript (sent from high school). Some colleges only require a complete application. Some require essays, teacher recommendations, a school report and/or a counselor recommendation.

High School Documents

After a student submits an application online, he/she should use Scoir to notify the College Advising office. (Log into Scoir – click on My Colleges – add college to Applied column.)  This step should be completed at least 3 weeks before the college’s deadline.  

Then your college advisor will process your transcript and other required materials* after receiving notification via Scoir that a student has applied.

*Required high school documents may include:

  • Transcript, School Report, School Profile 
  • Teacher Recommendation(s) 
    • If needed, recommendations from teachers may be requested early senior year.  Teacher recommendations should be requested 3 weeks or more before the college application deadline.
    • When school starts in August, students should pick up the yellow Teacher Recommendation Request form from the College Advising office, ask the teacher to sign it, and return the form to our office. 
    • PLEASE NOTE!  MBHS does NOT send teacher recommendations through the Common Application.  A student may use Common App as their admission application but should follow the MBHS procedure for letters of recommendation.  ALL recommendation letters will be sent by the college advisors through Scoir.
  • Counselor Letter of Recommendation – complete the Student Brag Sheet and Parent Brag Sheet in Scoir and submit your resume to the college advisors before the start of senior year. Share everything you think a college might want to know about you or your student. If you don’t tell us, then we don’t know! Your college advisor will incorporate your comments in the counselor recommendation to provide greater insight into your student. 

Standardized Test Scores are EXCLUDED from the list of the high school documents. In other words, applicants are required to manage and send their own test scores to colleges. The MBHS college advisors will not send ACT or SAT scores to colleges.

To send scores, log into your account on either ACT (ACT) or College Board for the SAT (College Board). You only need to send your score to a college once. Please confirm your test score with the college’s admission office.
