Future Academic Calendar Information

Posted Date: 3/17/25 (1:13 PM)

MBS family,

The Calendar Committee met over the course of the past few months to discuss and develop an academic calendar for the 2026-2027 school year. The committee’s goal was to create a calendar that is in the best interest of students for instruction and learning while considering family and faculty needs. For each school year, the academic calendar is dictated by the flexibility of the yearly calendar (based on set holidays and where they fall on the days of the week).

On January 30, we asked for community feedback and input on a calendar survey. Over 1,800 responses were taken in and reviewed. Every topic was considered and discussed in the committee’s process.

In the aforementioned survey to parents, teachers, and students, the main requests were as follows:

  1. The majority of survey respondents requested to end school before Memorial Day.

  2. The majority of survey respondents requested for school to start as late as possible.

  3. The majority of survey respondents requested a full week off for Thanksgiving break.

Because Memorial Day falls on May 31 in 2027, there is flexibility to allow a full week off school for Thanksgiving Break in the 2026-2027 school year. It became evident to the committee that the 26-27 and 27-28 calendars are similar so the committee took initiative to create the calendar for the 27-28 school year based on the preceding criteria. The committee found that a full week off for Thanksgiving Break would again be possible for 27-28. There will be years in the future (as there have been in the past) that this occurrence (5 days off for Thanksgiving) may not be the case unless we start school earlier than normal.

On Monday of this week, the Board of Education tabled the 2026-2027 and the 2027-2028 academic calendars for further community review and input. You can find those by clicking here to observe and email us (comments@mtnbrook.k12.al.us) should you have any feedback by Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Any feedback that brings about new topics not discussed previously by the committee will be considered and the calendars will be presented at next month’s April Board of Education meeting for approval.

We do our best to consider each topic and create a balanced schedule. Thank you for your input and understanding.
